MIGHTY SPARROW



Mighty Sparrow, born Slinger Francisco on July 9, 1935, in Grand Roy, Grenada, is a legendary figure in the world of calypso music.


He moved to Trinidad with his family when he was just one-year old.


His early interest in music was nurtured in the choir of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, where he learned Gregorian chants and other church songs.





Sparrow’s career took off in the 1950s when he began performing at Trinidad’s Carnival.


His energetic stage presence earned him the nickname “Little Sparrow,” which later evolved into "Mighty Sparrow".


His breakthrough came in 1956 with the hit song “Jean and Dinah,” which won him the Carnival Road March and Calypso King titles.




Throughout his career, Mighty Sparrow has been known for his witty and socially conscious lyrics, addressing topics ranging from politics to social issues.


He has recorded over 70 albums and written more than 500 songs.


His influence extends beyond calypso, incorporating elements of jazz, American pop, and other genres.




Sparrow’s contributions to music have earned him numerous awards.


including the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Trinidad & Tobago Government.


He remains an iconic figure in Caribbean music, celebrated for his dynamic performances and enduring impact on the genre.






His energetic performances and impactful lyrics have earned him numerous accolades, including winning Trinidad’s Carnival Road March competition eight times and the Calypso King/Monarch title eight times.
