Updated: 1 day ago

Stevie Wonder, born in 1950, is an American music icon known for his groundbreaking work as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Blind since infancy, he signed with Motown's Tamla label at age 11, rising to fame as a child prodigy with hits like "Fingertips" in the early 1960s.

In the 1970s, Wonder gained creative control over his music, releasing classic albums such as "Talking Book", "Innervisions", and "Songs in the Key of Life".

His fusion of soul, funk, and socially conscious lyrics helped define modern music.

Stevie Wonder was born six weeks premature, which resulted in retinopathy of prematurity, leaving him blind.

Despite this, he displayed remarkable musical talent from a young age.

By age 4, he was singing in his church choir, and by age 10, he had mastered several musical instruments, including the piano, harmonica, and drums.

At the age of 11, he was discovered by Ronnie White of the Miracles and signed to Motown’s Tamla label.

Throughout the 1960s, Stevie Wonder built his career with Motown, releasing a number of successful singles, including:

  • "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" (1965)

  • "For Once in My Life" (1968)

  • "My Cherie Amour" (1969)

These songs established him as a star, showcasing his soulful voice and his growing versatility as a musician.

Though the 1990s and 2000s saw fewer album releases, Stevie Wonder remained a powerful figure in music and activism.

He continued to tour and collaborate with artists across genres.

In 1996, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2009, he was honored with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song by the Library of Congress.

Over his career, he has won 25 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded male solo artists in history

Beyond his music, Wonder has been a tireless advocate for civil rights and social causes, including his role in helping establish Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

With a career spanning six decades, he is considered one of the most influential and beloved musicians in history.
